As we are in hurricane season now, it's crucial to be prepared for the potential impact of these powerful storms. Below is a list of ways for you and your family to be ready for the storms ahead.

  1. Create an Emergency Plan
Create a detailed plan that includes evacuation routes, meeting points, and emergency contacts. Be sure every family member is familiar with the plan and not left out of the loop.
  2. Build an Emergency Kit
Assemble a kit with essential supplies such as non-perishable food, water (at least one gallon per person per day for three days), medications, a flashlight, batteries, and a first aid kit. Don’t forget to include important documents (birth certificate, banking info, etc.)  and any special needs items.
  3. Secure Your Home
Inspect your home for vulnerabilities and make necessary repairs beforehand. Install storm shutters or board up windows to protect against flying debris. Check your roof, gutters, and landscaping to ensure they can withstand high winds.
  4. Stay Informed
Keep up with the latest weather updates and warnings from reliable sources. Have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio to stay informed if the power goes out. Be sure to have portable chargers ready for use so you have access to your cell phones.
  5. Prepare Your Property
Clear your yard of any items that could become projectiles in strong winds, such as outdoor furniture and garden tools.
  6. Consider Flood Insurance
If you live in an area prone to flooding, review your insurance policy to ensure you have adequate coverage. Standard homeowner's insurance may not cover flood damage.
  7. Plan for Pets
Don’t forget about your furry friends: Include your pets in your emergency plan. Pack a pet emergency kit with food, water, medications, and other necessities. Make arrangements for their safety in case you need to evacuate.

By taking these steps, you can minimize risks and ensure that you’re well-prepared for any hurricane that comes your way. Stay safe and be proactive—preparation is key to weathering the storm effectively.

Stay Safe!
